Fake Islands - of gold
These works of imagined places draw inspiration from documented fake islands throughout the 1600-1900 century. While most feature exaggerated attributes, all remain grounded in the construct of a place that could exist to the sailors and navigators. This notion of the "possible" suggests that such a place might be real, Or could occupy a place of its own.
In my new studio, I created a small island of yellow. From there, I explored these islands further, delving into what might be possible and playing with the potential of these islands of gold.
Fake Islands - of gold
A place to be where none can see,
Of gold and light—pure fantasy.
It’s aspiration’s cruelest torture,
To yearn for an elite culture.
So lament the shrouded mystery,
Of those unseen, a current history.
